Enchanted Village is One of the Best Christmas Traditions Around Boston

Tis the Season for holiday cheer and there is no better way to celebrate the spirit of the season than by visiting a beloved Vintage Holiday display that will make you feel like you have stepped back in time. The Enchanted Village is a magnificent holiday display of old fashion animated figures set in diorama-like scenes which look like they came right out of a Norman Rockwell painting.

History of the Enchanted Village

A Bavarian toy maker was commissioned by the Jordan Marsh Company in 1958 to create the holiday display which included 28 fully decorated holiday scenes featuring 250 animated figures.

Originally located at Jordan Marsh in Boston’s downtown crossing, the Enchanted Village quickly became a holiday tradition for so many families, including mine. I have such fond memories of going into this Boston department store at Christmas time to visit Santa and stroll through the village which took up an entire floor of the store at the time.

What a magical experience it was to see all those beautifully decorated village scenes all decked out for the holidays. As you stroll through the village, it comes alive with the beautifully painted animated figures slowly moving to depict what life was like during the early 20th century.

The Enchanted Village continued to warm the hearts of New England families until 1972, when Jordan Marsh closed the display. In 1990, it was revived for a short time until the store was purchased by Macy’s in 1998. After brief appearances at City Hall Plaza and the Hynes Convention Center, the village was abandoned and put up for auction in 2009.

In May of 2009, Jordan’s Furniture came to the rescue and purchased the surviving pieces of the Enchanted Village and had them restored.
