Newport RI is a fabulous place to visit any time of year, but visiting in springtime during the annual Daffodil Days Festival is a special treat. This vibrant festival celebrates the arrival of spring with a burst of bright yellow as more than 1,200,000 daffodils bloom throughout the city. One of the best spots to admire these cheerful flowers is along the Cliff walk, on Bellevue Avenue where you’ll find all the grand mansions and at the Castle Hill Inn.

We happened to be in Newport during the opening weekend of the festival and while the weather was not the best, we were thrilled that these flowers were in bloom everywhere we went. Even some of the storefronts were all dressed up in yellow daffodils to celebrate the season.

Here are some of the best things to do during a Spring Weekend in Newport, Rhode Island.

Stay at the Historic Hotel Viking

Hotel Viking - Newport RI

We stayed at the historic Hotel Viking, just a few blocks from the action on Thames Street and I highly recommend it. This iconic hotel dates back to the Gilded Age and is an architectural gem with an air of luxury and sophistication.

The hotel is within walking distance of many of the best restaurants in Newport and offers some great amenities, including an onsite spa, pool and fitness center.

Our room overlooked the courtyard which was filled with Adirondack chairs where you could relax and have drinks around the fire pits. Unfortunately, the weather was not cooperating so we did not take advantage of it.

The hotel also has a rooftop bar which is open seasonally, starting in May. One thing to note is that you will need to valet your car as there is no parking lot and there is a $45 fee for overnight parking.

Take a Stroll Along the Cliff Walk

During your weekend escapade in Newport, don’t miss the opportunity to stroll along the Cliff Walk, especially if you are visiting when the daffodils are still in bloom.

This iconic 3.5-mile trail runs along the coastline, offering breathtaking views of the Atlantic Ocean on one side and the majestic Gilded Age mansions on the other.

There are several entrances where you can pickup the Cliff Walk which allows you to do just a portion of the walk if you don’t have time or energy to do the entire trail.

In March, 2022, the Cliff Walk incurred structural damage near Narragansett Ave (Forty Steps) and there is a detour in place between Narragansett Avenue and Webster Street. In order to continue on the Cliff Walk at Narragansett Ave toward the Salve Regina University and the Breakers Mansion, you will need to walk the one-block detour or drive to Ruggles Avenue and park.

Explore Newport’s Shopping District

No visit to Newport is complete without indulging in some retail therapy. Stroll along Thames Street and explore its charming boutiques, art galleries, and specialty shops where you’ll find all sorts of unique treasures. From handmade jewelry, locally crafted artwork, upscale fashions and unique souvenirs, Newport’s shopping scene has something for everyone.

There are so many great shops and boutiques along Thames Street but here are a few of our favorites.

Primavera Newport Storefront

Primavera Newport – Located on Bowen’s Wharf, this store carries all kinds of upscale and unique gifts items, including jewelry, pottery and home goods such as candles, pillows and kitchen items. I spent quite a bit of time here just browsing and taking in all the unique and fun stuff. (4 Bowens Wharf)

Ben’s Furniture – This store was filled with loads of home decor items perfect for a house with nautical, cottage and coastal themes. Stroll through and you’ll find all sorts of unique items and whimsical gifts. It actually made me want to redecorate! (166 Thames St,)

Soft as a Grape – There is definitely no shortage of places where you can get some souvenir Tshirts or sweatshirts but this one in particular stood out to me. (170 Thames St.)

Sheldon Fine Art – This gallery had some amazing glass flowers and sculptures along with stunning artwork from various artists – all of which were way out of my price range! It is definitely worth popping in to get a glimpse of the beautiful works of art but be aware photographs are not allowed. (59 America’s Cup Ave)

Tour One of the Gilded Age Mansions

Visiting one of Newport’s famed Gilded Age mansions is always a treat and definitely a must when you visit. No matter how many times I’ve toured them, I am still in awe each time I explore the grand entrances, ornate ballrooms, and meticulously manicured grounds of these summer playhouses.

This weekend away, we decided to tour the Marble House with its iconic Chinese Tea House. Built by the Vanderbilt family in the late 19th century, this magnificent estate showcases exquisite architecture, lavish interiors, and breathtaking views of the Atlantic Ocean.

Be sure to make time to tour one of the mansions where you will step back in time and get a glimpse into the extravagant lifestyle of America’s elite during the late 19th century.

Experience Newport’s Culinary Scene

Newport has such a vibrant culinary scene with restaurants for any mood or budget. From fresh seafood straight from the Atlantic to innovative farm-to-table fare or dishes influenced from around the globe, there is something for everyone’s taste.

Here are some of our favorite restaurants we ate at during our weekend away.

Breakfast at Corner Café

The Corner Cafe is the perfect place to kickstart your day. This cozy cafe on Broadway Street has a warm and inviting atmosphere and is a favorite for locals and visitors. Most likely you will need to wait in line – which can run around the corner – but it did go fast. We sat at the counter and got to see everything that came out of the kitchen and it all looked so delicious!

From fluffy pancakes and hearty omelets to avocado toast or sweet pastries, it was hard to choose what to order. We finally decided on one of the specials – a sausage, egg and pesto burrito – which was super flavorful and came with some tasty home fries. I highly recommend sharing so you can get a taste of more than one dish or you may need to just keep going back.

Lunch at the Gas Lamp Grille (206 Thames St)

Situated in the heart of downtown is the Gas Lamp Grille which serves American-style dishes with a bit of a contemporary flair. This casual eatery has real gas lamps scattered throughout the restaurant and offers a diverse menu with a mix of fresh seafood, hearty sandwiches, and shareable salads.

The Gas Light Grille is a great place to watch a game and there is nightly entertainment.

Dinner at Pasta Beach (138 Bellevue)

The Bar at Pasta Beach Restaurant

Pasta Beach is an Italian Trattoria that offers authentic dishes made with fresh ingredients sourced locally and imported from Italy. The atmosphere here was fun and cozy with an upscale vibe and we loved its colorful lights and funky wallpaper.

We indulged in some cocktails and a delicious wood-fired margherita pizza to start which came out perfectly. The bolognese was so delicious that we devoured it before we even thought of taking a photo.

Pasta Beach is a hot spot so you will definitely want to make reservations in advance. There are also locations in Boston and Providence.

Rejuvenate at Spa Fjör

Tucked away downstairs in the Hotel Viking is Spa Fjör. This award-winning spa offers a range of therapeutic treatments designed to melt away stress and tension. From Swedish massages to aromatherapy and hot stone therapy, Spa Fjör provides a tranquil oasis where you can unwind and recharge.

We booked the hotel’s Spa package and opted for the Bespoke massage which was definitely a rejuvenating experience that left us feeling refreshed all day. Afterwards, take some time to relax in the hot sauna or himalayan salt room. If you brought your bathing suit, you can also try out the indoor pool. What a perfect way to start the day!

Visit the Castle Hill Lighthouse

I have visited Castle Hill Inn many times to enjoy the Lawn, but never ventured out to explore the lighthouse, which is located along its grounds, until now. The Castle Hill Inn Lighthouse is perched atop a rocky outcrop along Rhode Island’s coastline. This unique granite lighthouse has been a beacon guiding ships safely through the waters since 1890 and is listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

To get there, follow Ocean Drive towards the Castle Hill Inn. Public parking is available at Castle Hill Cove Marina, located on your right before you get to the inn. Take the trail that leads to the lighthouse from the parking area.

Even if you don’t visit the lighthouse, a drive down Ocean Drive is an absolute must. The scenic views of the ocean all along the way are truly spectacular. You can also stop at Brenton Point State Park to enjoy the scenic views or explore the park.

The Bottom Line

Springtime is a fabulous time to escape to Newport, especially during the Annual Daffodil Days Festival where you’ll see over 1,200,000 yellow daffodils blooming all around the city. This is the time when the days start warming up and seasonal restaurants and activities start opening for the season. If you catch it right, you can avoid some of the crowds and traffic that you will find in the summer. Another perk for visiting in the spring is that parking is free through the end of April.

When you visit Newport RI, you’ll find it has an undeniable charm with its rich maritime history, opulent mansions, vibrant downtown and miles of stunning ocean views. Whether you’re a history buff, a foodie, or simply looking for a getaway where you can explore or relax, Newport offers a little something for everyone and is a perfect weekend destination.
